From CDs to Streams: How We Consumed Music

CDs

The first CD, compact disc, prototype was created in 1979. CDs were created to hold 80 minutes of music and were quickly the most efficient way to store and play music. CDs were more effective and efficient than cassette tapes because you were able to skip to certain songs.

Eventually, the popularity of CDs gradually declined since 2008 due to the creation of iTunes, a music company made by Apple. Then, after the creation of Spotify, more than 63% of music was streamed. (CBBC)

iPods

Prior to iPods, six other MP3 players were available; however, the iPod proved to be a more comprehensive piece of technology to use. With the popularity of iPods, Apple was able to produce 32 different versions, all of which were extremely successful. However, the downfall of iPods became apparent with the use of streaming services on cellphones.

Spotify

Spotify first launched in 2008 and allowed for streaming to be done through one device instead of having a cellphone and an iPod. Spotify was one of the first apps available on the Apple iOS App Store, leading to a quick turnaround for people to pick which music streaming service to use. (The Evolution of Spotify: Key Milestones from Launch to Today)
